Tanzania was formed formally in 1964 and out of the union of the larger mainland of Tanganyika and the archipelago of Zanzibar. From the 1880s to 1919, it became a British mandate then served as a military outpost during World War. In 1947, Tanganyika became a United Nations Trust Territory until its independence in 1961. It became a British Protectorate before gaining its freedom and becoming what it is now.
